iPhone controlled saxophone re-synthesis

This video is a short test using a custom layout in the TouchOSC iPhone application, and MaxMSP. Building upon some earlier work using spectral snapshots taken from a live signal, I wanted to see what types of sounds I could get if I had control over certain aspects of the re-synthesised timbre – and this test is just one example of that.

The original sound used for the re-synthesis is a snapshot of an alto saxophone multiphonic… a pretty inharmonic timbre. From the iPhone I am controlling the amplitudes of the first 25 partials in this sound, which is then sent to MaxMSP and smoothed out to avoid any rapid jumps in amplitude. Apologies for the sound quality – it’s not the best, and it does clip at one point unfortunately, however hopefully this gives a rough idea about what can be achieved with this combination.
